Erin - Letting the Cat Out of the Bag (12)

Erin – Letting the Cat Out of the Bag

I look back to the one and only summertime
When my girl was the envy of every friend of mine
She slept safely in my arms
We were so young and invincible

Closed lips, she was never one to kiss and tell
Those trips in the summer never went so well
Young love is such dumb love
Call it what you want, it was still enough…

And we were just kids in love
The summer was full of mistakes we wouldn't learn from
The first kiss stole the breath from my lips
Why did the last one tear us apart?

Erin and Hannah sat at the diner, waiting for Danny and Violet.  Danny was not exactly the most punctual person in the world, especially when it came to anything early.  However, Violet was usually punctual to a fault, so Erin was surprised when they arrived at the diner as planned at 7:00AM and they were nowhere to be found.  Well maybe not as surprised as Hannah was.

“I can’t believe they’re not here.  Violet is never late for anything.”  Hannah’s seat faced the front door, and she looked up every time the bell at the top of the door clanged to announce a new customer.

Erin shook his head.  “She probably had trouble getting Danny out of bed.”  He took a sip of coffee and went back to his menu, trying to decide between the western omelette and the giant cowboy breakfast.

“What do you mean, ‘she probably had trouble getting Danny out of bed?’  Did they sleep together last night?”  Hannah’s eyes grew wide and she stared at Erin, waiting for an answer.

Erin rolled his eyes.  “Yes.  I thought Violet would have told you.”  He sighed.  “I didn’t mean to let the cat out of the bag.  You’re not going to rat me out, are you?  Danny will kill me later.”

She twirled a strand of her hair with her index finger.  She did this whenever she was nervous, and Erin thought it made her look incredibly vulnerable and sexy all at the same time.  “I’m not sure I can guarantee that.  I have a hard time keeping a secret most of the time.  All I can say is that it wouldn’t come out intentionally.”

“Fair enough.  I think we better go ahead and order.  There’s no telling when those two are going to show up.  I just hope they don’t miss the bus this morning.  I wouldn’t want to have to drive to Six Flags myself after paying for the trip.”  Erin flagged down their waitress and they placed their orders: western omelette for him and strawberry pancakes for Hannah.

They sat in silence for a few minutes, and Erin could tell that something was working on Hannah’s mind.  He couldn’t tell what she was thinking about, but part of him was afraid to ask.

“So did you want to get a hotel room last night?”  She finally asked.

“I never said that.”  Erin could tell this conversation was going to be a lose/lose situation.  If he said that he wanted to get a hotel room, she would accuse him of only wanting one thing.  If he said that he didn’t want to get a hotel room, she would think he didn’t want her.  He really had not had quite enough coffee to have his wits about him fully and mentally kicked himself for opening his big mouth.

“So do you want to have sex with me?”  Hannah crossed her arms across her chest and waited for him to respond.

Erin sighed.  “Hannah, there is no correct way for me to answer that question.  You’re already mad at me, and I haven’t said or done anything wrong.”

She huffed.  “It’s a valid question.  I deserve an answer.”  She glared at him.

“We wouldn’t even be having this conversation if I hadn’t slipped up about Danny and Violet.  Why is this turning into a fight for us?”  The waitress brought their orders just in time.  They ate their meals in silence, both stewing on the unanswered question that hung between them.  Once he finished his omelette, Erin got up, paid the bill and came back to leave a tip.  He paused at the end of the table but did not sit down.

“Hannah?”  She looked up at him but did not answer.  “We can talk about this another time if you would like.  Today I just want to go ride the roller coasters and have fun with my girlfriend, if she’ll let me.  Is that all right with you?”  He smiled expectantly, his dimples winking at her.

“Okay,” she conceded.  “But we’re not done talking about this.”

“I had a feeling you were going to say that.  Let’s get going, sweetie so we don’t miss the bus.”
