Introduction: At the Crossroads

At the Crossroads

Just wishing and hoping and thinking and praying
And planning and dreaming, his kisses will start
That won't get you into his heart
So if you're thinking how great true love is
All you gotta do is hold him and kiss him
And squeeze him and love him
Just do it and after you do
You will be his.                                               --Dusty Springfield (Wishing and Hoping)

Violet - Welcome to My Senior Year (1)

Violet: Welcome to my Senior Year

So if you're too school for cool
And you're treated like a fool
You could choose to let it go
We can always, we can always party on our own

So raise your, so raise your glass if you are wrong
In all the right ways
All my underdogs we will never, never be
Anything but loud and nitty gritty, dirty little freaks...

Won't you come on and come on and
Raise your glass for me

Danny - First Date (2)

Danny: First Date

I've never known a girl like you before
Now just like in a song from days of yore
Here you come a knockin', knockin' on my door
And I've never met a girl like you before…

I hope to God I'm talkin' metaphorically
Hope that I'm talkin' allegorically
Know that I'm talkin' about the way I feel
And I've never known a girl like you before
Never, never, never, never
Never known a girl like you before

Violet - Skating on Thin Ice (3)

Violet - Skating on Thin Ice

Lookin’ back now it makes me laugh
We were growin’ our hair
We were cuttin' class
Knew it all already there was nothin’ to learn
We were strikin' matches just to watch 'em burn...
Man I don't know
Where the time goes
But it sure goes fast...
Had no excuses for the things that we'd done
We were brave, we were crazy, we were mostly
Young, young

Danny - Getting Feedback (4)

Danny - Getting Feedback

I took a walk in the rain one day
On the wrong side of the tracks
I stood on the rail 'til I saw that train,
Just to see how my heart would react
Now some people say that you shouldn't tempt fate,
And for them I would not disagree
But I never learned nothing from playing it safe,
I say fate should not tempt me
I take my chances, I don't mind working without a net
I take my chances, I take my chances every chance I get

Violet - Where Do the Noses Go? (5)

Violet - Where Do the Noses Go?

Just a kiss on your lips in the moonlight
Just a touch of the fire burning so bright
And I don't want to mess this thing up
No, I don't want to push too far

Just a shot in the dark that you just might
Be the one I've been waiting for my whole life
So baby, I'm alright with just a kiss goodnight

Danny - Stick It to Me

I'm not talking about retreating no sir
Gonna take our stand in this chevy van
Windows open on the rest of the world
Holding hands all the way to dixie land
We've been trying to turn our lives around
Since we were little kids
It's been wearing us down
Don't turn away now darling
Lets fire it up and wind it out

Erin - Partners in Crime (7)

Erin – Partners in Crime

All day long we work in the fields
Then bring it on home to a home cooked meal
We love you like Sunday, treat you like Saturday night
And when the bed gets full we can sleep in the hay
We’re from the country and we like it that way

Everybody knows everybody, everybody calls you friend
You don’t need an invitation, kick off your shoes come on in
Yeah, we know how to work and we know how to play
We’re from the country and we like it that way

Violet - Feeling Exposed (8)

Violet - Feeling Exposed

2 AM and I'm still awake, writing a song
If I get it all down on paper, it's no longer
Inside of me threatening the life it belongs to

And I feel like I'm naked in front of the crowd
'Cause these words are my diary, screaming out loud
And I know that you'll use them however you want to

But you can't jump the track, we're like cars on a cable
And life's like an hourglass, glued to the table
No one can find the rewind button now
Sing it if you understand

And breathe, just breathe

Danny - There's a First Time for Everything (9)

Danny – There’s a First Time for Everything

Well, I remember every little thing as if it happened only yesterday
Parking by the lake and there was not another car in sight
And I never had a girl looking any better than you did
And all the kids at school, they were wishing they were me that night

And now our bodies are, oh, so close and tight
It never felt so good, it never felt so right
And we're glowing like the metal on the edge of a knife
Glowing like the metal on the edge of a knife

C'mon, hold on tight
Oh, c'mon, hold on tight

Thought it's cold and lonely in the deep dark night
I can see paradise by the dashboard light

Erin - Learning the Rules (10)

Erin – Learning the Rules

You know I never
I never seen you look so good
You never act the way you should
But I like it
And I know you like it too
The way that I want you
I gotta have you
Oh yes, I do…

Cause baby we'll be
At the drive-in
In the old man's Ford
behind the bushes
till I'm screamin' for more
Down the basement
lock the cellar door
And baby
Talk dirty to me

Violet - Crossing the Line (11)

Violet – Crossing the Line

Baby, I want you
Like the roses want the rain
You know I need you
Like the poet needs the pain

And I would give anything
My blood, my love, my life
If you were in these arms tonight

I'd hold you, I'd need you
I'd get down on my knees for you
And make everything alright
If you were in these arms

I'd love you, I'd please you
I'd tell you that I'll never leave you
And love you 'til the end of time
If you were in these arms tonight

Erin - Letting the Cat Out of the Bag (12)

Erin – Letting the Cat Out of the Bag

I look back to the one and only summertime
When my girl was the envy of every friend of mine
She slept safely in my arms
We were so young and invincible

Closed lips, she was never one to kiss and tell
Those trips in the summer never went so well
Young love is such dumb love
Call it what you want, it was still enough…

And we were just kids in love
The summer was full of mistakes we wouldn't learn from
The first kiss stole the breath from my lips
Why did the last one tear us apart?

Danny - The Morning After (13)

Danny – The Morning After

And I was lost for words
In your arms
Attempting to make sense
Of my aching heart
If I could just be
Everything and everyone to you
This life would just be so easy

Not enough time for all
That I want for you
Not enough time for every kiss
And every touch and all the nights
I wanna be inside you

We will make time stop
For the two of us
Make time stop
And listen for our sighs

Not enough time for all
That I want for you
Not enough time for every kiss
And every touch and all the nights
I wanna be inside you

Violet - Can't Get Enough (14)

Violet – Can’t Get Enough

Hot as a fever, rattling bones
I could just taste it, taste it
If it's not forever, if it's just tonight
Oh, it's still the greatest, the greatest, the greatest

You, your sex is on fire
And you, your sex is on fire
Consumed with what's to transpire

Erin - Facing the Music (15)

Erin – Facing the Music

Yeah, I wanna feel the sunshine
Shinin' down on me and you
When you put your arms around me
Well, baby there ain't nothing in this world I can't do

Sometimes it's hard for me to understand
But you're teachin' me to be a better man
I don't want to take this life for granted like I used to do, no, no

I wanna love somebody
Love somebody like you
I'm ready to love somebody
Love somebody like you, ooh

An' I wanna love somebody
Love somebody like you, yeah                                            Somebody Like You (Keith Urban)

Violet - Out of my Comfort Zone (16)

Violet – Out of my Comfort Zone

I wonder what it's like to be a super hero
I wonder where I'd go if I could fly around downtown
From some other planet, I get this funky high on yellow Sun
Boy I bet my friends will all be...stunned, they're stunned

Straight up, what did you hope to learn about here
If I were someone else, would this all fall apart
Strange, where were you, when we started this gig,
I wish the real world, would just stop hassling me

Erin - House Party: Uncensored (17)

Erin – House Party: Uncensored

Baby, what you got goin' on Saturday?
You know, words got it, there's gonna be a party,
Out of town about half a mile.
Four wheel drives and big mud tires.
Muscadine wine

Oh baby, you can find me.
In the back of a jacked up tailgate.
Sittin' 'round watchin' all these pretty things.
I get down in that Georgia clay.
And I'll find peace.
In the bottom of a real tall cold drink.
Chillin' with some Skynyrd and some old Hank.
Lets get this thing started.
It's my kind of party.

Violet - Change of Plans (19)

Violet – Change of Plans

I woke up this morning
With this feeling inside me that I can't explain
Like a weight that I've carried, been carried away, away

But I know something is coming, I don't know what it is
But I know it's amazing, can save me
My time is coming I'll find my way out of this longest drought

And it feels like today I know, it feels like today I'm sure
It's the one thing that's missing, the one thing I'm wishing
The last sacred blessing and hey it feels like today, feels like today

                                                                          Rascal Flatts (Feels Like Today)

When Daniel dropped me off at home, I knew that he was angry, but I didn’t acknowledge that I knew.  It wouldn’t have mattered when I actually told Daniel that I was not going to Mizzou with him; it still would have accomplished the same thing – mainly pissing him off.  He had never asked me what I wanted to do; he just blindly assumed that I was going to follow him.  I held onto a cardinal belief that there is a distinct difference between lying to someone, and just not telling them.  The bottom line is that I just didn’t tell Daniel about my plans; I never lied to him.

I had about an hour before I needed to report to the video store for my shift, so I decided that a short nap would be in order.  I flopped down on my bed and set my alarm for thirty minutes and closed my eyes.  About 5 minutes later, the phone rang.  It figures!  Even in the year 2002, my mother had continued to opt out of having an answering machine or have caller ID.  So if you wanted to know who was calling, you had to actually be home, and get to the phone before it stopped ringing.

I hopped up and ran for the kitchen.  The phone was going on its fifth ring – which is usually when most people give up – when I breathlessly picked up the receiver.

“Hello?”

“Hey Sis!  It’s me!”  Getting to talk to Morgan always made my day, even if she was interrupting my precious nap time.

“What’s up?  You just went back to LA yesterday.  You miss us that much already?”  I joked.

“No, it’s not that.  I wanted to talk to you about your song, Vi.” (Note: For the record, Morgan is the only person I let call me that; she is my older sister, after all.)

“Okay I guess.  What about it?”

“I didn’t want to say anything until I was sure, but I can’t wait.  I think I may be able to get someone to buy your song for a movie.”

I was dumbfounded.  “Morgan, are you kidding?  You’re not playing a joke on me, are you?”

“No Vi, I am 100% serious about this.  I already talked to Mom and Dad earlier.  I want you to come out to LA and record a demo so I can play it for the folks at the studio.  Can you get away next week?”

“I guess I could ask for a couple of days off at the store.  Since it’s summer, we should have plenty of coverage.”  Then it dawned on me.  “What about Erin?”

“Oh.  Well that’s one of the other reasons I called.  I need to get his number and talk to his dad about coming out, too.”

“You know Morgan, if I was talking to anyone else, I would not believe this right now.”  I was still having a hard time, even though I knew she was definitely on the level.  “I’m going to have to call Erin first; he’s never going to believe you otherwise.”

“Fair enough.  Can you call him right away?  I really want to get moving on this so we don’t miss our chance to present this to the producers.”  Morgan really did know how to get down to business.

I nodded.  “Sure, I can call him as soon as I get done talking to you.  Mr. Taylor is really nice, so I’m sure he will be okay with this.  Erin is going to flip!”

Morgan laughed.  “I kind of get that feeling.  I did want to ask you one more thing.  I spoke to Erin briefly after the graduation ceremony, and he said that you’ve written other songs.  Is that true?”

I hesitated.  “I have a journal that he’s read.  It’s full of poems I’ve written.  That’s probably what he’s referring to.”

“Bring it with you, kiddo.  I want to see what you’ve got.  Now hurry up and call your buddy so I can get things rolling on my end.  Love ya!”  And then she was gone, as quickly as Mary Poppins when the wind changes.

I sat there with the phone in my hand, not quite sure what I should say to Erin.  I dialed his number and waited.

Ten days later, we were standing in the airport, waiting to board a plane to Los Angeles.  Morgan had left our tickets open-ended as a precaution, and so I had loaded up my suitcase until I practically couldn’t get the zipper shut.  I had visions of a baggage handler tossing it a little too carelessly and my clothes exploding in a rainbow of fabric all over the tarmac as it hit the ground.

Once again, Erin was bouncing off of the walls with nervous energy.  He had wanted to wear his favorite white Stetson, but thankfully had opted for a Dodgers ball cap from his collection instead.  Standing next to each other in line, our matching back packs must have made us look like a set of deranged fraternal twins to people around us; I didn’t care.  But I had attached a stuffed Eeyore keychain to one of my zipper pulls after our mix-up so that we would not get them confused again.

“I still cannot believe this.”  Erin gushed.  “I can’t believe we’re going to record a demo.  Please pinch me now.”

I reached for his bicep and squeezed.

“Ow!  Ow!”  He hollered, a little too loudly.  “I was kidding, Violet!”  He rubbed his arm.

“Then you shouldn’t have said that, you big baby.  That did not hurt you!”

He clutched his chest.  “I am mortally wounded.  You killed me!  Now who’s going to play your song?”

I laughed at his dramatic display.  “I am quite sure that I could find a replacement for you in a hot minute in L.A.  I’m sure good guitar players are a dime a dozen out there.”

“Ouch!  Once again, she cuts right to the quick, ladies and gentlemen!  She’s a cold, heartless…”

I put a finger to his lips and cut him off.  “You better watch what you say, Mister.  I’ll have Morgan put you out on the porch.”

“Muh, muh, mah, muh.”  He responded with my finger still pressed to his mouth.

“If that’s knucklehead speak for ‘yes, ma’am’ then I’ll remove my finger.”

He nodded, and I took my finger back.  “Now that’s more like it.”

“Woman, you really are a pain in my…”  He put his fist to his mouth and bit down his knuckles.

“Ladies and gentlemen, he can be taught!”  I clapped in mock excitement.

“That’s okay.  Laugh now.  We’ll see who’s laughing when we hit the runway.”

I really was not a big fan of flying, so mostly I was goofing around to try and deflect the growing feeling of nausea that was creeping up from my toes and camping out in my gut.  Poking at Erin was distracting me from that for the moment.

“All right, you win.  I quit.  I promise to behave for the rest of our flight.  Tall order for me, I know, so no smart comments or the deal is off.”

We boarded the plane and took our seats in first class.  “I still can’t believe we’re flying out to L.A. just to record a demo.  What a waste of money!  No wonder movies cost so much to make.  And I cannot believe that stewardess didn’t ask you for ID before pouring you a pre-flight cocktail.”

“It’s the dimples.  Chicks can’t resist.”  He showed them off just to prove his point.

“Well they’ve never done a thing for me, just so we’re clear.”

“Crystal sweetheart, but I wouldn’t waste them on you anyway.”

“Oh please!  Don’t make me use my barf bag before we even take off.”  We really did sound like a couple of bickering siblings if anyone listened closely to us.  I took out my headphones and CD player from my purse and set them in my lap.  I stowed my purse under the seat in front of me and then put my headphones on.

Erin stared at me.  “Aren’t you going to keep me company with your witty banter?”  He teased.

I rolled my eyes at him.  “Wake me when we get to L.A.”  I closed my eyes and turned up the volume.

Danny - Feeling Left Out (20)

Danny – Feeling Left Out

Many times I’ve tried to tell you
Many times I’ve cried alone
Always I’m surprised how well you
Cut my feelings to the bone

Don’t wanna leave you really
I’ve invested too much time
To give you up that easy
To the doubts that complicate your mind

We belong to the light
We belong to the thunder
We belong to the sound of the words
We’ve both fallen under

Whatever we deny or embrace
For worse or for better
We belong, we belong
We belong together

Erin - Sucker Punch (21)

Erin – Sucker Punch

It's getting late have you seen my mates
Ma tell me when the boys get here
It's seven o'clock and I want to rock
Want to get a belly full of beer

My old man's drunker than a barrel full of monkeys
And my old lady she don't care
My sister looks cute in her braces and boots
A handful of grease in her hair

Don't give us none of your aggravation
We had it with your discipline
Saturday night's alright for fighting
Get a little action in

Get about as oiled as a diesel train
Gonna set this dance alight
Cause Saturday night's the night I like
Saturday night's alright alright alright

Violet - It's Now or Never (22)

Violet – It’s Now or Never

When I look into your eyes I can see a love restrained
But darlin' when I hold you, don't you know I feel the same? yeah
Nothin' lasts forever and we both know hearts can change
And it's hard to hold a candle in the cold November rain

We've been through this such a long long time
Just tryin' to kill the pain, ooh yeah
But lovers always come and lovers always go
An' no one's really sure who's lettin' go today, walking away

Erin – Living the Dream

I know we got it good, but they got it made
And the grass is getting greener each day
I know things are looking up, but soon they'll take us down
Before anybody's knowing our name, they got

All the right friends in all the right places
So yeah, we're going down, they got
All the right moves and all the right faces
So yeah, we're going down

Everybody knows, everybody knows where were going
Yeah, we're going down, they said

Violet – Everything Changes

You’re aching, you’re breaking

And I can see the pain in your eyes

Says everybody’s changing

And I don’t know why

So little time

Try to understand that I’m

Trying to make a move just to stay in the game

I try to stay away

Cause everybody’s changing

And I don’t feel right

Erin - Steps to Recovery (25)

Erin – Steps to Recovery

They tried to make me go to rehab, I said, "No, no, no"
Yes, I've been black but when I come back you'll know, know, know

I don't ever wanna drink again
I just, ooh, I just need a friend
I'm not gonna spend ten weeks
Have everyone think I'm on the mend

And it's not just my pride
It's just 'til these tears have dried

They tried to make me go to rehab, I said, "No, no, no"
Yes, I've been black but when I come back you'll know, know, know
I ain't got the time and if my daddy thinks I'm fine
He's tried to make me go to rehab, I won't go, go, go

Violet - Sanctuary (26)

Violet – Sanctuary

If you ever find yourself stuck in the middle of the sea
I'll sail the world to find you
If you ever find yourself lost in the dark and you can't see
I'll be the light to guide you

Find out what we're made of
What we are called to help our friends in need

You can count on me like one, two, three
I'll be there and I know when I need it
I can count on you like four, three, two
And you'll be there 'cause that's what friends
Are supposed to do, oh yeah, ooh, ooh

If you toss and you turn and you just can't fall asleep
I'll sing a song beside you
And if you ever forget how much you really mean to me
Every day I will remind you

Find out what we're made of
What we are called to help our friends in need

Gillian - Reinforcements (27)

On a river bank with all my friends
A big old rope tied to a limb
And you're a big old wuss if you don't jump in the water

And when that summer sun starts to beatin' down
And you don't know what to do
Grab your swimming trunks, ice up that old Igloo
And drive until the map turns blue…

All you really need this time of year
Is a pair of shades and ice cold beer
And a place to sit somewhere near water

Violet - Back in the Game (28)

A strangled smile fell from your face
It kills me that I hurt you this way
The worst part is that I didn't even know
Now there's a million reasons for you to go

But if you can find a reason to stay
I'll do whatever it takes
To turn this around
I know what's at stake

I know that I've let you down
And if you give me a chance
Believe it, I can change
I'll keep us together

Whatever it takes

Erin -- Upping the Anty (29)

Venus had been very cloak and dagger about what she had in store for us.  She called me several days after my welcome home dinner and asked me to meet her today at a studio I’d never been to yet.  I wasn’t even quite sure where it was to be honest; I had to Google it.   Based on the directions, it looked like it was in the middle of the Sony movie lot.  Despite my comments at the dinner party, Venus had never steered me wrong, and I wasn’t about to start second guessing her now.

Turns out I was right, and I found myself pulling my new silver Chevy truck up in front of a line of sound stage warehouses.  I didn’t see Violet’s Ford nearby, but I headed towards the buildings anyway.  The girls were always dogging me about being late, and I was determined to be on time today.  Keeping up appearances could be exhausting, but I did not want to risk losing my meal ticket at this point.

I walked along the sidewalk until I saw the building with the number 35 over the door.  A security guard sat outside the door.  As I approached, he picked up his clipboard.

“Erin Taylor to see Venus Mitchell.”  I stated crisply and smiled at him.  He did not return my grin.  He checked off my name and waved his wand in front of the door to unlock it.  “Third door on the right” he barked.  I grabbed the handle and stepped inside.  The hallway was dimly lit, and momentarily an unfortunate scene from one of the Scream movies flashed thru my head.  I counted to three and turned the knob on the third door.

Inside looked like a TV control booth, with monitors from floor to ceiling.  Venus and Violet turned to face me, along with a man I didn’t know.  The hairs on the back of my neck stood up, and I worried for a brief instant that this was another intervention of some kind.

“Hey Cowboy,” Venus said.  “We’ve been waiting for you to join the party.”  Her smile put me at ease instantly.  “I think you’re going to like your next assignment here.”

Violet chimed in.  “It’s a really exciting opportunity for us.  I can’t wait to get started.”

“Well then.  Will somebody clue me in as to what is making everyone here so giddy with enthusiasm?”  I waited impatiently.

“Basically, we’re being asked to write a song for a movie!  Eek!!” Violet practically squeaked with glee.  “Isn’t that the coolest thing ever?  I know I sound so unprofessional right now.  Sorry Robert.”  She glanced towards him for a second before turning back towards me.  “We’re going to watch the movie now.  Well really a rough cut, before they do all of the editing and sound effects and stuff.”

Robert interjected.  “Violet is right.  It’s pasted together and you will see all of the counters on the top and bottom edges.  I loved your song “Our Dance” and I’d like to see what you can come up with for this.  I have a feeling it’s right up your alley, and Venus agreed with me immediately.  She’s got a knack for being right all the time, so I figured I better listen to her when she told me that you two were the ones to talk to about this.”  He reminded me a little too much of Dr. Green on ER with his bald head and wire-rimmed glasses.

I thought for a moment before speaking.  “It certainly isn’t something we’ve done before, but we’re up to the challenge, aren’t we Violet?”  I looked to her for confirmation.

“Absolutely!   I can’t wait to dive in.”  She confirmed.

“That’s what I like to hear,” said Robert.  “Let’s not waste any time then.  Erin, hit the lights and take a seat so we can get started.”

The movie rolled by in a flash.  When I got up to turn on the lights, I could tell from Violet’s glassy eyes that we would knock this one out of the park, in a manner of speaking.  Venus looked like perhaps she had also gotten misty over the Hallmark card ending.  I knew this movie could be huge for us if we hit the right tone with the song.

Robert surveyed his audience and clapped his hands together.  “So tell me what you think.  We’re sure this is going to be a huge hit with women, and we want a soundtrack to piggyback and add revenue like they did for My Best Friend’s Wedding.  We’ve already got some licenses for remakes that will be integrated into the picture and sung by some popular heavy hitters.  The original song is what we still need though.  Think Titanic.  Think Rocky.  That’s what I want.  When you hear that unforgettable melody and lyrics that take you back to the movie every time you hear it.  I’m getting chills just thinking about it.”

“I’m sure we can deliver that for you, Robert.”  I spoke confidently and looked him square in the eye.  “Violet and I will put our heads together and come up with the recipe you’re looking for.”

Venus chimed in.  “Just to be clear, what kind of turn-around time do you expect?  I want to give my superstars enough time without pushing your deadline.”

“Can we meet back here in two weeks?  If you finish sooner, that would be even better.”

“I think we can make that happen.”  Venus glanced at Violet and me for confirmation.  We both nodded in agreement.  “Great.  I’ll send over the paperwork Robert.”

And then Violet blindsided everyone.  “Wait a minute.  May I say something?”  We all turned and stared at her.  “I want to negotiate a stipulation.  I want a percentage.”  She focused her attention on Venus.  “If this movie is as big as I think it is going to be, and we are writing the theme song, I want a percentage.”  She turned to Robert and continued.  “You called us here because you know we are good. Better than good.  And I…we, Erin and I will make that happen.  Therefore, I am asking for a percentage of profits from the soundtrack and from the movie.”

The silence thundered in my ears.  My mouth fell open but I could not locate my ability to speak.  What in the hell did she think she was doing?  Trying to sabotage our very existence?  I could not afford to go toe-to-toe with Venus at this juncture; my every move was still being monitored under a microscope.  My calm veneer quickly dissipated as the seconds ticked by slower than an NFL clock.

After what seemed like a decade of torture, Robert chuckled softly as he shook his head.  “You told me she was a firecracker, didn’t you Venus?”  He peered at Violet over his glasses.  “I had not counted on adding stakeholders at this juncture, Ms. Hutchence.  I will have to take that back to our investors and hash out that little detail.  While I work on that, I would appreciate you focusing your creative talents on the task ahead.  I’m sure you can agree that having a profitable product is of utmost importance here.”

“Absolutely.”  Violet smiled at him.  “I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.  And just so we are clear, Venus was not aware that I was going to ask for this.  I kind of surprised myself too.  I’m sure you can appreciate taking advantage of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity like this, at least from a business perspective.  I trust you and Venus will be able to iron out the details.”

She stood and picked up her notebook.  “Erin, I’ll meet you at the studio in an hour.”  She disappeared before I could even process the events that had just happened in front of my face.  I think I mumbled some sort of thank you before sliding out the door but my mind was still a jumbled mess.  I didn’t know what I was going to say when we met up at the studio in an hour, but I couldn’t decide whether to kiss her or throttle her.  I had about 58 more minutes to decide…
